Passing Through Theatre (PTT) is an indie theatre company dedicated to creating original new works that explore the intricacies of human connection, share authentic stories that are socially and politically relevant to our generation, and challenge traditional forms of theatre.

Co-Founded by Lily Sutherland and Erin Morgan, Passing Through Theatre launched in the summer of 2015 with the original new work, Beginagame (Toronto Fringe, 2015) directed by Mekdes Teshome. There it was lauded as “one of the more thought-provoking pieces [...] at this year’s Fringe” (Melanie Hrymak, My Entertainment World). As a woman-led company, new to the Toronto theatre community, PTT quickly established a positive reputation for exploring complicated social issues, and delivering strong, powerful performances.

The following year, PTT company members Sutherland and Morgan devised and toured the site-responsive work, Gather (2016), to Winnipeg, Calgary and Victoria festivals. This truly unique outdoor theatre piece resulted in sold-out performances and garnered attention from publications including the Calgary Herald.

In 2018, Lily Sutherland, Rebekka Gondosh and Kelsey Dann collaborated on the original production, Ephemeral Home (Hamilton Fringe, 2018), which struck a chord with Hamilton audiences.  It was described as, “a very tight script which rang with wit and intelligence" (Claud Spatafora, Raise the Hammer) and, "one of the most unique and rewarding Fringe experiences you are likely to encounter" (Brian Boodhoo, Raise the Hammer).

Passing Through Theatre continues to invite various independent artists to work professionally on unique projects. These include, Roots: an evening of interdisciplinary storytelling (Hashtag Gallery, Toronto, 2019) which was co-produced and presented with visual artist, filmmaker and storyteller Muna Youssouf with support from the team at Hashtag Gallery and Concrete Cabaret: Chips Edition (The Baby G, Toronto, 2019), an experimental puppetry and performing object cabaret, where PTT's puppetry work was presented in 2019.

In February of 2021, comprising company members Lily Sutherland, Rebekka Gondosh and Shanice Bowrin, PTT was commissioned to create an original new work, Through The Pages. This innovative digital theatre experience was presented at Frost Bites Festival, Hamilton’s only site-specific performance festival, where it was met with acclaim and remounted for an extended run in March 2021.

We continue to partner with creators across artistic disciplines for new play development, workshops, creative exploration and productions.

Under the leadership of Artistic Director Lily Sutherland, our dynamic and experienced collective aims to explore unique ways of sharing meaningful stories, connect with our community, and challenge the status quo.
